1. What do you think of speech reading or lip reading? What are your thoughts on this topic? Do all deaf people know how?I think that speech or lip reading is something that should never be expected out of anyone, deaf or hearing. I do not think that a personââ¬â¢s mouth can be understood without sound coming out of it. There are too many different ways of saying things; lip shapes are different; lip movements are different; people enunciate words differently therefore causing different facial movements. I would personally never approach someone with the question of ââ¬Å"Can you read my lips?â⬠Deaf people are not lip readers but some could be considered as speech readers, that of which they are looking at all facial expressions and body movementsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Now that I am taking this ASL class, I have been better educated with many different aspects of Deaf culture and the Deaf community. Hopefully, with time and better education of society in general, the offensive words will gradually fade away.4. What are advantages and disadvantages of deaf people using hearing aids or cochlear implants? What are your thoughts on both of these devices? The advantage of hearing aids is that they can pick up some sounds which make a deaf person feel more aware of what is going on. There are digital aids that can be programmed to pick up the frequencies of speech but these are designed for users with moderate deafness. The disadvantage of hearing (digital) aids is that severely or profoundly deaf people do not benefit from digital aids. Others feel that they are uncomfortable and they do not like wearing them.Hearing aids have been accepted as part of the Deaf culture because they are removable and they do not involve invasive surgery. The advantage of having a cochlear implant would be that is allows the re cipient to hear a wider variety of sounds and possibly develop better speech patterns however, it is unknown what the long-range effects of this device may do to the tissue and nerves ofShow MoreRelatedDeaf People1132 Words à |à 5 Pagesdiscover if hearing people were correct in this assumption, and you could tell that someone was deaf because of a particular visual clues that would indicate they are deaf. string(37) " could respond to him appropriately\." Over the past few weeks there was one major conflict that I will discuss in this essay. It was an ongoing and detailed conflict which needed to be resolved through a mediation process. It all started the day that the childrenââ¬â¢s father decided not to show up for several visitations requirements. We will write a custom essay sample on Conflict Management Essay or any similar topic only for you Order Now I had felt that the constant disappointment was enough for the children so I text him a message to say not to bother picking up the children anymore. He did not like this and started to turn up to my doorstep late at night. He was quite angry and was bashing down the oor and yelling.I didnââ¬â¢t open the door I just rang the police as the children was scared by his reaction. The police had arrived after the childrenââ¬â¢s father left my house and I filed a police report to protect myself and the children from him coming to the house late at night and being abusive towards us. While the police was I was feeling very anxious and overwhelmed by the whole incident. I was talking quite quickly and very nervous, as I was fidgeting whilst telling them the details of what had happened. At this stage I donââ¬â¢t think I handled my emotions at all ell as I was very flustered and couldnââ¬â¢t think properly. Whilst the police was here I did achieve the skill of active listening as they explained what I needed to do and how to go about doing it all. I didnââ¬â¢t interrupt as they was speaking as I usually do when people speak and I sat there taking it all in and didnââ¬â¢t respond until the police officer had spoken.Active listening has three purposes when managing conflict 1. To gain information, 2. To affirm and 3. To respond to inflammation and bring down high emotional states. We benefit from active listening because it nsures us that we are getting all the information that we need and so that we can be heard. I also repeated back to the police officer what she had said to me to make sure I had understood her correctly. At that stage I also reflected back on the situation with the police officer as to how I could of handled things a little bit better for example not to send text messages to him and only talk to him either in person or on the phone. This will also prevent any other person getting involved, and me insuring Iââ¬â¢m only talking to him.At this stage my abilities to be assertive with their father was not done very well but I did manage to get my point across to the police. Assertive behaviour communicates feelings, needs and beliefs of a person. It is important to be assertive so they you can express your needs and others can have an opportunity to know how u feel. In this conflict spoken about above, my conflict behaviour was fight: aggressive. I didnââ¬â¢t care about the fathers needs or concerns at this stage, as I thought I was doing the best for the children. I took the I win , u lose ituation to start with as I suppose if let like I had control over the situation , which is quite obvious I didnââ¬â¢t at the time. Then I took the flow: assertive as we took it to court and then was directed to undertake mediation to resolve this situation in a more reasonable way without the children present to hear any of it. In many of my conflicts throughout the past eight weeks I have always started with the Fight: aggressive behaviour (Holier, Murray Cornelius H (2004). As Eunson (2007) explains different approaches in dealing with conflict, I then took a different pproach and went through the mediation process. As we moved on to the mediation process to resolve our dispute, I made sure I was focused; I knew what I wanted to say and was calm goi ng into the mediation. I needed to change my approach to this conflict in order to get the results that I wanted from it. As (Holier, Murray Cornelius (2004) explains different approaches to conflict management and behaviours; I knew I need to go into it with an assertive approach. As with all mediation processes you need to let each other speak without interruption and listen to what is being said.We both had our turns in discussing our issues and both responded to each otherââ¬â¢s issues in turn. My behaviour as assertive worked as my issues were discussed in great detail and we had made decisions to change things to suit everyone in the situation including the children. We stuck to what was important and dealt only with the issues that needed to be discussed. As the father has an extended family, I made it quite clear that his extended family has nothing to do with me and that my only concern was for my own children. One of our main problems that we canââ¬â¢t resolve hings, is the fatherââ¬â¢s extended family gets dragged into our own issues with our children and that frustrates me as I donââ¬â¢t feel like itââ¬â¢s my concern. We both agreed that we need to work together and share the responsibility of our own children, regardless of our situation.I laid down what I wanted to protect my own children and spoke in great detail as to why I had these concerns. The father had listened to everything I said and had agreed with me about all the issues. It was the fatherââ¬â¢s turn to express his concern and to discuss the issues he had. I sat there nd listened to everything he had said and went through all his concerns one by one, on a couple issues I had to repeat back to him so that I was sure that I understood what he was saying. Also to make sure that I understood his concern and could respond to him appropriately. You read "Conflict Management Essay" in category "Essay examples" I gave my feedback on his issues (using the techniques and hints for active listening set out in the text and of Fiona Hollier, Kerrie Murray and Helena Cornelius (2004), some hints are to put the focus of attention on the speaker and do not change the topic, give feedback on your feelings and the ontent, challenge attitudes such as powerless or hopelessness, enquire about the speakers needs, concerns, anxieties and also difficulties ), and how I felt that they would affect the children and also expressed the concerns of the children. The children also had previously discussed with me what they wanted and I expressed that to their father as well. For example the children felt they need more one on one time with him, as they feel they were competing for his attention over there as they are one of six children. I walked into the mediation calm and remained calm and focused throughout the ediation. I stuck with my direct points which I had previously set out before entering the mediatio n and didnââ¬â¢t drift off into unnecessary topics. I didnââ¬â¢t experience any anxiety like I had in the previous conflict and I was very open minded to get everything sorted and to fix the problems.By the end of the mediation I was content with the outcome and was relieved that it was all over, as the situation was dragging out for the past four months. I was surprised at how well I had handled my emotions compared to the first situation and noticed that I had learnt a ew key skills to help me resolve my problems in the future. I was very assertive, I had said what I wanted and stuck to what I wanted not backing down. I was very clear and precise in what I wanted and what was in the best interest of the children. Although I had set out to get what I thought was best for the children, I was also reasonable about the decisions made for example if my children was sick I would take them back early, as the father has six children all under the age of nine in his house. To be fair I agreed, as my children would probably prefer to be home if they were sick anyway.Looking over both conflict situations and how both had ended and how I reacted in both, I can see that my first approach, fight: aggressive was not the best way to handle the situation. I didnââ¬â¢t foresee what the outcome would be; I only looked at the moment. To improve the situation I should have spoke to the father either via phone or in person to discuss my concerns not via text messages. I also could have stayed calm and not yell back at him even though he was yelling at me. I also should have asked him as to why he wasnââ¬â¢t picking the hildren up and find out the reason for this so that I could determine if it was going to be an ongoing thing or there was a reasonable reason as to why he couldnââ¬â¢t make it. My main skill that I needed to work on in the first conflict would be my listening skills, as it took me to go through mediation to be aware that I need to stop and listen then reflect on the situation at hand.Realising there are both sides to all situations and to make an educated decision and one that is fair for both parties, you need to listen and understand the other partyââ¬â¢s side in order to make a air decision. Also as discussed in the module, controlling your emotions plays a big part in any dispute resolu tion. How you express them is very important and to be able to stay in control of them. I have learnt that controlling my anger does make for a better outcome and one that is less stressful for everyone. Also having control over my anxiety makes a lot of difference to me physically. Sitting down and making a few key points to the situation at hand instead of responding straight away, also gives you a more objective view to the situation. In any other onflict situations that I come across I will be sure to listen to the other side and see how it affects them. Then sit back and reflect as to how it will affect me and come up with answers calmly and be assertive with my decision, as well as taking in how the other party feels. To control my anger in future conflicts and not necessarily respond negatively to the situation, as I have realised there is a positive to every situation. You just need to see the situation for what it is and stay on that topic not direct it off into unnecessary topics which are not relevant to the situation. Making sure I understand the other person point of view is also something to work on in the future as there may be underlining problems that Iââ¬â¢m not aware of at the time of conflict which could make what I say worse rather than better. Now I try to take a step back and look at the situation from both sides in order to understand the whole position. I also can see how responding to a situation to soon without looking at everything can make a simple situation turn into something more than what it needs to be, so now I always look and take a deep breath then respond calmly to things.Overall my change in attitude and being assertive benefited me, as the problems were solved. By being assertive my concerns were heard and discussed. Both our feelings and the childrenââ¬â¢s feelings were heard and taken into account on every concern we both had. Active listening helped us to be able to listen to each other and understand how we both felt, it also gave us the ability to stop and th ink about the situation then respond back correctly instead of just responding with little information about what was actually going on.References Holier, F, Murray K Cornelius H (2004 Eunson, B (2007) Conflict management Brisbane How to cite Conflict Management Essay, Essays

Question: Discuss about the Strategy and Business model Innovation. Answer: Introduction The report is based on the E-learning activity of the week-3 and week-4; there is a brief description of the theories shown in the video. The description of theories is linked with the example of the higher education industry. Moreover, the topic discussed in the report is Strategy and Business model innovation. Strategy Each and every company form a strategy to achieve the long-term objective of the company. The achievement of the goals is essential for each and every company (Grant, R.M., 2016); this concept is clearly shown in the week-3 activity video. Similarly, in the higher education industry, there is a formation of the business strategy which helps the institution to make the place in the market. For instance; The Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA), this college provide the education to the students who are looking for the higher education degree in the medical management. The strategy followed by the college is to provide the professional education, leadership, advice, and expertise in the medical management. The college came into the existence in the year 1967, located in Australia (RACMA, 2013). The company competes with the other college that provides the courses related to the medical management in Australia but still the RACMA is one of the oldest colleges which is offering its services to the students. There are different colleges who offer the courses related to the medical and the company maintains the unique value by offering quality services to the students. Along with this, the college provides these services to promote the safe and effective healthcare services to the students (RACMA, 2012). There is set of standard for the medical practitioner training in the leadership and management related to the medical and health. The role of the professional medical manager is unique than the other medical specialties. The reason being it involves a focus on leadership, on management and on specialist clinical governance. This value is hardly provided by any other college or institute and this is the reason it is becoming the competitive advantage for the college. This is th e unique value that is provided by the college, this is the fact that in the current complex environment the roles and expectations of medical managers are becoming important (RACMA, 2014). RACMA is the key player in the field of the medical in Australia and New Zealands health care system. The college is following the strategy to expand the business across the borders. provides is the way through which the college can provide more and more accessibility which makes the brand known in the market. This unique value leads to the success of the college, to achieve the success the college need resources and capabilities (RACMA, 2012). The resources and the capabilities of the RACMA consist of the brand value, which is increasing because the college is having good market value and awareness. The campus of the college shows the tangible resources and the human resources are indicated with the faculty or tutor of the college. The college management believes in hiring those tutors who are experienced, professional, and people who have the practical knowledge about the medical field. The Human resources need to be managed by the college because the students get attracted towards the quality of the services provided by the college to their students (RACMA, 2012). The value needs to be sustained by the college as this unique value is the only way through which the college will be able to make the profit or revenue. Apart from it, the unique value provided by the college is the only way through which the college can form the relationship or connection with the people who are involved in a field of Health. RACMA should add on new and innovative services with the use of technology so that the student can avail the services. The use of technology is becoming necessary for each and every college in this competitive world and this is the high time for the RACMA to make use of the services. These advanced services help the students to proceed with their bright future as the learning and understanding help the students in the near future. These values attract the students towards the university, this is also a fact that the university is the oldest university because of this the value of the degree of the university is more important. The success of the innovation needs the resources that can be goodwill of university, faculty of the university, infrastructure of the campus and many other things. The university believes in hiring those tutors who are experienced and can offer the professional learning to the candidates (ANU, 2017). The value proportion or the services provided to the candidates helps the university to get attracted towards the university which leads to the revenue and profit of the university. The university also provide the distance learning facilities to many of the students which help in generating revenue for the university. On the other hand, the university expand this amount on technology advancement to provide extra facilities to the candidates. The success of the University is very clear and visible as the university is on 1st position in Australia and whole of Oceania. Along with that, the university holds 20th position in the world by 2018 QA World university rankings. Australia National University is 30 years older from now so its high time that the company should provide affiliation facilities in many other countries particular for the entrepreneurship and innovation courses so that more and more students can get the advantage (ANU, 2017). The Last Shot Essay Example
The Last Shot Essay Dan McCarthy Fall Semester 2010 Dr. Rich Miller Essay #2: The Last Shot The dream of creating a greater life for oneself and family through the game of basketball is not restricted to any time or place in American history. As long as there is a court, there lies the opportunity to experience the hoop dream. For the likes of Tchaka, Russell, Corey, and Bill Russell, their paths may have been different, but their struggle for greatness in the ever-shrinking window of the hoop dream is all too familiar. The Last Shot by Darcy Frey chronicles the lives of three basketball players and their struggle on the streets of Coney Island, New York in the early 1990ââ¬â¢s. The book covers eight months of the journey of Tchaka Shipp, Russell Thomas, and Corey Johnson as they ward off the temptations of agents, college coaches, and drug lords in the ruthless city of Coney Island. Frey follows these athletes from the conclusion of their junior year at Abraham Lincoln High School through their senior year, allowing the reader to watch their growth as athletes, as well as their trials in attempting to realize the hoop dream. In the case of Corey, Russell, and in a lesser sense Tchaka, it was their intelligence in the classroom. Being raised in an inner-city educational environment such as the one provided by Coney Island is an entirely detrimental experience for those who are looking to experience a higher education at some point in their lives. There were multiple occasions in the story that alluded to the playersââ¬â¢ inability to score high enough on their SATââ¬â¢s as the reason for being unable to play for a Division I team in the NCAA. However, their failure to score a 700, the required threshold to stay eligible for a Division 1 scholarship, was no fault of their own. ââ¬Å"But the requirement has proved to be an insurmountable obstacle to thousands of black players like Russell, Corey, and Stephon with poor educations and no experience in taking standardized tests,â⬠(Frey, 187). Their school system had always put basketball before education, and for most of their lives the Coney Island crew did the same. They are merely a byproduct of a broken system that prevents thousands of talented basketball players in inner cities and beyond from realizing their full potential on the basketball court. Although intelligence was never a limiting factor for the likes of Bill Garrett, he dealt with a crueler discriminating factor that prevented him realizing the hoop dream in his upbringing- the color of his skin. Despite excelling on and off the basketball court, Bill was plagued with the backdrop of 1950ââ¬â¢s rural Indiana, where it took a lot more than a double-double for an African-American to be accepted in society. Before Bill suited up for Indiana University, there was a ââ¬Å"gentlemanââ¬â¢s agreement not to recruit or play blacks,â⬠(Graham, 92). This prevented many star players before Garrett, including Johnny Wilson, who was named Indianaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Mr. Basketballâ⬠in 1946, from experiencing the hoop dream for themselves simply because of their skin color. Whether these athletes were limited by their education, or limited by the color of their skin, their journeys in attempting to realize the hoop dream each had their share of road blocks in a system seemingly built for them to fail. Another harsh reality of the hoop dream is that it is painfully selective of who is fortunate enough to experience it for themselves. Although Tchakaââ¬â¢s, Russellââ¬â¢s, Coreyââ¬â¢s, and Bill Garrettââ¬â¢s stories each unfolded differently, they were all dealt with the same harsh realization- that the hoop dream was not theirs to experience. It was how each of these players handled their failure that defined them as basketball players, as well as human beings. In Coney Island, New York, the expectation of basketball players is to reach for the stars, and if they donââ¬â¢t make it then they spiral back down the Earth until theyââ¬â¢ve hit rock bottom, just like all of those who came before. ââ¬Å"All of the great Coney Island players, a few surviving all right, but most of them waiting vainly for a second chance, hanging out in the neighborhood, or dead,â⬠(Frey, 227). Precisely was the fate of Tchaka and Russell, who despite having years of playing in ââ¬Å"the Gardenâ⬠and blossoming as pure talents at Abraham Lincoln High School, they simply did not have what it took to make it in the NBA. Their stories after basketball was put in the rear-view mirror are nothing short of tragic, and leave the reader wondering what if certain events transpired differently for the stars of Coney Island. Although Bill Garrett was also unable to experience the hoop dream as a member of the Boston Celtics, he was able to make the best of his situation as he had done many times before by remaining involved in the game he held so dear. This is where his story veers off from the likes of Tchaka and Russell. His life did not end with his basketball dreams; he instead used the education he earned at IU to make a name for himself off of the basketball court, and led his life in the same manner as he led himself as a forerunner for Indiana basketball. Although there are so many similarities between these players in how they succeeded in their realms, but failed to reach to supreme goal of playing in the NBA, their vast differences in life after the hoop dream is a somber reminder of the much fewer opportunities for success there are for those who were raised in Coney Island, New York as compared to Shelbyville, Indiana. Following in the footsteps of those in The Last Shot, Sebastian Telfair emerged as a phenomenon in Coney Island during the early 2000ââ¬â¢s. The story of his transition from high school court menace to NBA lottery-pick superstar is chronicled in the ESPN documentary Through the Fire. And itââ¬â¢s easy to see that the piece was filmed right in the heart of the Coney Island projects, bringing Darcy Freyââ¬â¢s classic to life. There are many scenes from the book that almost come to life before the viewerââ¬â¢s very eyes as we watch Sebastian Telfairââ¬â¢s journey through the fire. The Last Shot focuses heavily on those who failed to realize the hoop dream, and who were left to live in Coney Island. Darcy Frey often referred to the Marbury brothers, who all failed to reach the pinnacle of success that the youngest Stephon achieved in the NBA. However, the pain endured by those who failed before him is not truly investigated like Jamal Thomasââ¬â¢ struggle in Through the Fire. As Sebastian Telfairââ¬â¢s half-brother, he watched his younger brother realize the dream he had for himself, all while continuing to live in the dreaded Coney Island projects. When asked what it was like o return to Coney Island after getting so close to the hoop dream himself, he provided a chilling response that encapsulates the agony of reaching for the stars, and grabbing at nothing. ââ¬Å"As long as Iââ¬â¢m here, itââ¬â¢s pain. As long as Iââ¬â¢m here, itââ¬â¢s pain,â⬠said Thomas. (Through the Fire) One of the most interesting parts of The Last Shot to read through was Tchakaââ¬â¢s experience at the ABCD camp and his first blatant encounter with college coaches and the â⠬Å"sneaker pimps. â⬠It was the first time the pressure was heavily on him to succeed and make a name for himself in front of some of the top coaches in the nation. While it was fantastic to read how Tchaka rose from essentially a no-name to a highly sought-after big man by the end of the camp, one could really get a feel for the intensity through Sebastian Telfairââ¬â¢s eyes in Through the Fire. Already headlined as one of the top prospects heading into the Nike camp, Telfair had a lot to prove in front of the big name coaches and agents who would help dictate where he would start his career. Like Tchaka nearly a decade before, Telfair stole the show at the camp, and even gained the attention of Sports Marketing legend Sonny Vaccarro (Through the Fire). Being able to compare and contrast how each player handled being under the spotlight was a real treat, and wouldnââ¬â¢t have been possible without getting a second-hand look of Coney Island by watching Through the Fire. How to Prevent Caregiver Burnout
How to Prevent Caregiver BurnoutBecause of a variety of reasons, personal caregivers are more involved in their work than they have ever been before. Their increased involvement in their jobs has many studies in mind and is highly cited as a cause for caregiver burnout.Caregivers are typically those who have cared for a loved one and want to continue the care giving as a career. Whether it is a loved one that is in need of constant medical attention or someone who needs daily help with basic chores like getting dressed, caring for an elderly or disabled person may be just what the doctor ordered. The job of caring for a person in need of care may be emotionally draining, physically taxing, and mentally draining as well. Many times, if the caregiver does not take the time to truly enjoy their work and truly enjoy their clients, they become drained and they do not remain at the position they are in. On the other hand, some caregivers enjoy the work and want to stay in the field because they can be self-motivated and they truly enjoy what they do.However, increasing the level of involvement in care giving does not guarantee a greater success rate. As mentioned, the caregiver is continually burning out due to emotional, physical, and mental demands and workloads. This is due to the fact that the caregiver gets totally involved in their work and is involved in the job. The overwhelming feeling of this overwhelming work load can actually lead to personal caregiver burnout.Burnout occurs when too much time is spent on work and the needs of the client are not being met. Those who are skilled at their work became very upset and experience a great deal of stress. In addition, they may take longer to finish their work, spend more time fixing what is wrong with the client, and not have enough time to bond with the client and work with them to handle the problems their client is having. One way to combat caregiver burnout is to ask yourself several questions before you hire s omeone to be your caregiver. Look at how long the caregiver has been caring for someone or what skills the caregiver has acquired to help them care for someone, and if the caregiver has ever experienced any type of emotional burnout.Personal caregiver burnout can also be caused by the intensity of care giving. Often times, if a caregiver is spending their entire life caring for someone, they are burnt out at a certain point. When it comes to personal caregiver burnout, the best thing to do is to look for a trained, licensed caregiver that is able to handle the needs of a client while also caring for themselves and being fully emotionally and physically involved in their work. Becoming well-rounded and emotionally healthy will ultimately allow a caregiver to remain a caregiver for many years to come.

Research Paper Topics For Those Who Want to Go Back to School
Research Paper Topics For Those Who Want to Go Back to SchoolThe biggest research paper topics for a college student, aside from choosing a major, are college applications and scholarships. However, in today's time, it seems that the popularity of online college degree programs has exploded, which has led to more funding and more universities making online classes and other online degree programs available. With more college students going to college online these days, more research papers are being written on the subject of online college degree programs. So, if you are a student interested in pursuing your studies online, but would still like to know what research paper topics you should be focusing on, here are some of the top research paper topics for those who wish to go back to school. One of the first things you should consider when deciding on research paper topics for yourself is whether or not you can attend classes at all. If you cannot, then your best option would be to stu dy part time, which would also help you fit your school's schedule. If you are still young enough, you may also have the option of taking some advanced or professional courses, such as a master's program, a Ph.D. or something related to business.Another important research paper topics for those who want to take online classes is what type of classes to take. It would be ideal to choose a college or university that offers traditional subjects, but also classes that allow students to pursue other interests as well. Students who would like to get a degree in medicine, engineering, etc., might benefit the most from having classes that are math-based, such as calculus. For those who would like to do the theoretical work in college, but would want to apply it to practical matters, such as being an architect, then an environment-based class might be just the thing. In addition to these traditional subjects, research paper topics for the future student include careers-related subjects, such as human resources, law, accounting, finance, sociology, education, etc. This is where you need to be sure that your online college degree is truly focused in the subject of your choice, and it does not end up being 'online sociology' or some other 'minor' subject. This way, you will avoid having a dead-end job after graduation.Another important topic to study when deciding on an online college degree would be how the online class works. Are there requirements to complete certain parts of the course? Some schools will require specific exams or tests to be taken to be eligible for the course, which could include tests of mathematical skills or even tests that have to do with writing. If you are planning to attend online classes for the first time, it is important to learn some of the research paper topics before you decide. In doing so, you will be more informed about what is required of you. This way, you will avoid wasting time on subjects that you are unprepared for.
